Pet Training

Essential training for your puppy and kitten

A new puppy or kitten is a joy to behold – playful, inquisitive and full of energy. But as fun and adorable as they are, there are a few ground rules that you need to set out when you introduce them to your home or they will cause more trouble than joy. It is crucial that you teach them a few basics during the first few days or you will be setting yourself up for long-term problems with them.
First of all, make sure you are properly equipped for your new pet, and you have appropriate bedding, food and water bowls, toys and special puppy or kitten food. If you own a puppy, then you should also purchase a collar and lead.
Make sure you give your newly purchased kitten or puppy enough room to breathe as it acclimatizes to its new home. Everyone will want to play with it, but if you smother your new family member too much it can be an exhausting and potentially traumatic experience.
Never forget that your new puppy or kitten has just been taken away from their natural family, and everything is scary and surprising for them. You need to show him or her that they are both safe and secure in their new environment. Introduce them to the other members of the household gradually. Show them that you are all friendly and do not under any circumstances frighten them.
Make sure the floor around their bed has suitable amounts of newspaper on the floor and they have access to plenty of food and water. Play with them gently, and if it looks as if they want to go to sleep, let them. They will be full of more energy when they wake up.
Introduce a routine to them as soon as possible.  When they need to go to the toilet, make sure you take them outside and show them the best place to go (for puppies) or show them where their litter tray is (for kittens). Dogs and kittens learn by routine, so be patient with them and they will gradually pick up on where to go to the toilet, what toys they can play with, and that biting and chewing is not approved of.
Patience is the key here, and you should never lose your temper with them. Reward your kitten or puppy for good behavior, and they will soon pick things up. The routines they learn now will stay with them for life, so the more effort you make now, the greater the rewards will be later on…

These little bundles of joy are also extremely fragile so make sure you have invested in good puppy insurance and kitten insurance!
