DOGS PROVIDE COMFORT IN BOSTON

After the terrible recent events in Boston, therapy dogs were deployed to bring comfort to those in need. Five specially trained golden retrievers were sent into the community by the Lutheran Church Charities, to provide comfort and (cuddles) to people after the traumatic incidents.

The dogs have been specially trained to deal with extremely stressful situations. In seven different US states, the organisations work with 67 dogs, which have previously been sent to comfort people at terrible events such as Sandy Hook Elementary and Hurricane Sandy.

"Its a chance to help bring some relief to people that are shaken up because of the bombings", Tim Hetzner who is the president of Lutheran Church Charities told Today.com "People talk to the dogs theyre like furry counsellors".

The programme started in 2008 with dogs from the age of 6 weeks taking part in K-9 Comfort Dogs service training that last between 8 months- 1 year.  Hetzner explains - "We train them to ensure they can fly in airplanes, stay calm around noise and in disaster areas. They must also be able relate to all age groups and all handlers".

During their time in Boston, the dogs will visit hospitals and memorial services. People can also keep in touch with their canine friends on social media, with each dog having their own Facebook and Twitter accounts.
