It's too hot... for your pets!
July 2009
Leading pet insurer Healthy Pets is warning pet owners to make sure their pets do not overheat during the current heatwave. Owners of dogs particularly need to be vigilant and amongst other things ensure there is always a bowl of water on hand.
Obviously dogs should not be left in a car on any sunny day, preferably not at all. The temperature inside a car parked in direct sunlight will rise very quickly with the windows acting as a magnify glass. In under 20 minutes the temperature could be as much as 40 degrees. There is also a possibility of a car becoming too hot even on cloudy days as the sun's rays will penetrate the cloud.
Healthy Pets advises all dog owners to make sure that there is plenty of shade for their pet and plenty of water on hand in a bowl that cannot be tipped over. Ask you vet if your dog's coat needs to be thinned out for the summer. Instead of exercising your dog during the day, walk them early in the morning and late in the evening. If your dog does become overheated gently cool them down with wet towels or under a shower.
Mark Effenberg, Chief Executive of Healthy Pets, commented, ‘As an owner of a Golden Retriever I am very aware of the problems that the hot weather can cause and I ask all dog owners to spare a thought for their pets during this rather unusual weather we are experiencing at the moment. '
Healthy Pets continue to offer three levels of cover, either £1,000, £3,000 or £5,000 per illness, with an excess of only £75 per condition. Unlike many other insurers there are no hidden extras such as higher excesses and percentage contributions towards claims when pets become older. Ongoing conditions are covered and clients can keep claiming indefinitely for the same illness up to the value of the policy.
An independent, dedicated company, Healthy Pets deals only with insuring your pets and one phone call gets straight through to one of the friendly team who are handling your policy. Alternatively there is an interactive website where clients can email, renew policies, request claim forms and add on extra pets.
