We all know what the benefits of owning a pet can be – they provide owners with hours of fun, love and companionship over their lifetime which is a highly rewarding experience. Of course, depending upon both yourself and your circumstances, your choice of pet will vary accordingly. You have to be realistic about what kind of pet you decide to own, and there are a number of different factors that come into play when making this decision which you need to consider carefully.
To help you make the right selection when deciding upon a pet, we have complied a quick guide to the most popular pet types you can own…
Small animals: Mice, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits all come under the small animal classification. They are the ideal pet for children to own, as they are relatively easy to care for and they tend not to be too expensive. However, on the downside they tend to be short lived and are susceptible to illnesses.
Fish: Fish are pets that, whilst not quite as cuddly as other animals, are easy enough to maintain and can fit into any lifestyle. Whilst tropical fish tend to cost more money to buy than freshwater varieties, both kinds of fish are relatively inexpensive to fed and maintain.
Birds: Birds are intelligent and sociable pets to own, and can be kept in almost any size of room. Small birds in particular can be quite playful to own, and you will find hours of non-stop entertainment with them. Parrots are also a popular type of bird that many people, although be prepared to spend a lot of time with them as they are highly sociable animals.
Reptiles: As pet choices go, you would be hard pressed to find a more exotic pet than a reptile. Whilst an interesting pet to own, they require a lot of specialist care, and require specialist tanks, lighting and temperatures, along with particular dietary needs.
Cats: Cats are very independent pets to own, and they do not need the same amount of attention as other animals do. You can keep them as outdoor or house cats. They are very long-lived creatures, and tend to live for a minimum of 15 years (this is even longer if they are house cats).
Dogs: If it is loving attention that you are looking for, then a dog is a natural choice to be considered as a pet. They need almost constant attention, regular exercise and do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Only consider owning a dog if you live in a house and do not work full time, as anything less than that is not really fair on your pet.
