However, it is not just humans who are using social networking sites, a growing trend amongst pet owners is to give their furry loved ones their very own page in cyberspace!
Now thanks to Facebook applications such as Dogbook, Catbook, Horsebook and even Ferretbook, your pet can make friends with budgies from Italy and rabbits from Mexico, swapping stories and photographs, discussing the latest developments in the animal world.
The applications are the brainchild of Geoffrey Roche, a Canadian who launched Dogbook onto the world two years ago. The applications popularity grew and grew, and soon the phenomenon spread to other animals as pets of every kind soon had applications dedicated to them. Altogether over 3 million pets use these applications to interact with each other, and it is a number that is growing by the day.
